The department also supports basic and applied research to promote people’s health and wellbeing. Increasingly, the department research activities provide mentoring opportunities for undergraduate as well as postgraduate students.

As a Head of Basic Medical Sciences Department, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (DBMS) at the Faculty of Medicine (FM), Aqaba Medical Sciences University (AMSU), Aqaba - Jordan. The DBMS is a multi-disciplinary unit and the basic science teaching and research hup of the university. DBMS is a community of scholars graduated in internationally recognized universities and interested in educating future physician and scientists. The DBMS provides the foundation for understanding the molecular, cellular and system organization of human body and the biological mechanisms to adapt to environmental changes and disease conditions. The DBMS members are committed to provide high quality and innovative teaching of basic science disciplines to medical and dental students. We also pursue cutting-edge basic and translation research to serve the national and international community.

The DBMS Faculty teaches undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs. In the first semester of the first year, the department offers biology, general and organic chemistry, biophysics, and computer skills courses. The DBMS also offers anatomy and embryology, general Histology, physiology, and biochemistry courses in the second semester of the first-year medical program. During the first semester of the second year of the medical program, DBMS faculty teaches general pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology courses in addition to biochemistry. In the subsequent one and half year, we participate in organ system courses in an integrated manner. All teaching activities are offered through rich team-based learning experience in classrooms, laboratory, and small group discussion. The FM classrooms are equipped with up-to-date audio-videos teaching aids. Additionally, the teaching laboratories are in service and equipped with modern facilities for high quality medical education. As the university grows, the DBMS is expected to have a great impact in the postgraduate program.
